Stillwell family papers, 1941-1945.

This collection contains journal entries and correspondence from merchant marine Thomas Stillwell to his family during World War II, as well as Woman's Christian Temperance Union membership cards and letters of support addressed to Mrs. L.J. Stillwell. Contents include a diary of Thomas Stillwell's travels from Newport News, Virginia to Venezuela and Trinidad; one letter describing Thomas Stillwell's conversation with Mr. Raman of India regarding politics; clippings; and the April and March 1943 issues of the Pearl Harbor bulletin. Stillwell lost four fingers on his right hand and spent time in Japan and Hawaii during the war.

Temperance organization founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1874. Campaigning against the use of alcohol and in favor of labor laws and prison reform, the W.C.T.U. became one of the largest and most influential women's organizations of the 19th century. It became global when the World W.C.T.U. was founded in 1883.
